We have had a lot of enquiries from people who would like to start a fashion brand/label and need help understanding as to what significant role a pattern plays in this process, and this is what we aim to achieve in this post.
Let's say for example, you want to make a dress and sell it to your customers for £150. Well before you get to the retail price of £150 you would have gone through a lot of costing systems e.g. Price of fabric, manufacturing, zips, buttons, and pre-production.
The 'pre-production' part is what we do. We may cost a pattern for you at £140, and you then say, "but I'm selling it for £150, how can I pay £140 for a pattern?" And based on that you decide it's too expensive! Well we're going to show you how in-expensive a pattern really is.
When you designed the dress, you probably had it in mind to sell a few right...? Let's say you wanted to sell 100 dresses well £140(price of pattern) / divided by 100 dresses (amount you want to sell) = £1.40
This is how you really cost a pattern and not by the price of making it. This calculation can be and should be used to find the cost of everything you are spending, you may be surprised as to where the bulk of your expenditure goes.
